Standard 4.L.5. Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and subtle differences in word meanings.
a. Explain the meaning of simple similes and metaphors in context.

Today is Saturday, and I'm at the beach. Yesterday my teacher was talking about similes. She said a simile compared two things. We know that something is a simile when it says "like" or "as."
Let's look around the beach and see what similes we can make! I want to help YOU learn what a simile is!
I went to the beach and saw water as blue as the sky. The water covered the sand like my mother covers me with a blanket.
I also saw clouds as fluffy as cotton candy. They were pink, orange, and blue.
This means that the clouds were fluffy like cotton candy even though they aren't actually cotton candy.
The jellyfish were like ghosts floating around in the ocean, lost and wandering.
They had tentacles as thin as spaghetti, and a body shaped like a bell.
Their tentacles aren't spaghetti, but they sure look like it!
When I looked down, there were shells of all different sizes in the sand. Some were as smooth as silk, and others were rough like a dog's tongue.
Pelicans sat on the docks, watching and waiting to catch fish. Their mouths were like an ice cream scoop when they caught fish.
I know their mouths aren't really ice cream scoops, but they do the same job as an ice cream scoop!
