Beating The Odds
by: Brynn Cunningham
This book is dedicated to Chloe Ayers and all the other girls who believe they can!

Chloe was an athletic and strong nine year old girl whose favorite hobby was wrestling. Wrestling midget was her level. She ate, slept, and dreamt wrestling. Today was the morning that she had trained for since November's first wrestling practice.
On this cool March morning, Chloe was having second thoughts and feeling a bit nervous about the matches. Even though she had been wrestling for months, today was the STATE tournament, and Chloe was wrestling boys-not girls! Besides that, they were the best boys in the entire state! Yikes! Even though she was nervous, she was going to try her hardest and do amazing!
When Chloe arrived at the state championship that morning, the arena thundered with noise, and there were clusters of people everywhere. The stadium was so monstrous that she could get lost at any second and miss all of her matches!
After taking in the overwhelming sight of the stadium, Chloe decided to explore. As she walked down the different corridors and peeked inside the different team rooms, the excitement began to tickle its way into her.
When Chloe was done exploring the stadium, she had to report to weigh-ins. As she stood in line with the other wrestlers and waited for her turn, her body began to shiver. She wasn't cold, but she was shaking and trembling with nervousness.
Anxiously, she stepped onto the scale when her name was announced. She made weight and now the butterflies in her stomach were fluttering. In only a few minutes, Chloe was about to wrestle boys, and these boys looked mean.
During weigh-ins Chloe overheard boys snickering at her. They pointed at her and laughed and not in a friendly way. Chloe knew it's because they think they will conquer her simply because she's a girl. Chloe looked up and saw the boys' names printed on their backpacks: Joey, Bobby, and Eddie.
Thankfully, their coaches called the boys. At least she wouldn't have to listen to their snickering now, but the damage was done. Chloe's confidence began to deteriorate. She really didn't want to wrestle them, but she had to.
Chloe returned to the thundering arena, and the wrestlers began doing warm-ups and drills. Groups of nervous kids were doing jumping jacks and sprawls that Chloe was accustomed to, but Chloe had no one to stretch with because there were no girls on her team. Luckily, there were other girls on different teams in different weight classes, so she could warm up with them. For some reason, Chloe couldn't clear her mind of the mean boys and their meanness. It was haunting her and she started to think she wasn't good enough.
The bees were buzzing in Chloe's stomach as she was about to wrestle her first match against Eddie. As soon as the whistle blew, Chloe double-legged Eddie onto his stomach. Then she half-nelsonned him right to his back. She pinned Eddie in five seconds flat!
Eddie whined like a baby! He threw his head gear off and stomped away! He wouldn't even shake hands with Chloe, because Eddie went to the loser's bracket where he would be wrestling Bobby! Maybe he would win that match! What was really good was that Chloe went to the winner's bracket where she would be wrestling Joey!
