One evening, Jimmy was at home watching the news with his Mum. The TV was flashing reports of people lying on hospital beds, doctors and nurses wearing masks. "What's happening?" Jimmy asked his mum, confused. "A bad disease is spreading across the world," she said gently, switching off the TV. "We have to be careful and wash our hands to keep people safe." Jimmy nodded. He could do that.

For the next few weeks, Mum always made sure Jimmy washed his hands when he got home. Jimmy didn't tell her but he practiced washing his hands after school. He didn't want his Granny or Mum getting sick. At school the older kids were always laughing and joking about it. Jimmy didn't understand, the virus wasn't funny. They had to protect people by washing their hands, otherwise Granny might get sick. He told his Mum, "Just ignore them Jimmy, you are doing the right thing, that's all that matters," she said.

A few weeks later, Jimmy and Mum were out shopping. Mum was going through her list and checking off what she needed. "Mummy," asked Jimmy. "Do we need toilet paper?" Mum looked back down at her list and smiled. "You read my mind," she said. Jimmy ran ahead to the next aisle, "Where's the toilet paper?" he called to Mum. She caught up to him and looked around, she sighed. "Everyone is buying up the toilet paper, they are scared it will run out," she said. Jimmy didn't know that the virus ate toilet paper. Mum bought napkins instead.

A few days later Jimmy's teacher, Mrs Miller told his class that starting next week, school was going to be shut down for at least 2 weeks until holidays. They would stay home and do online learning to keep everyone safe and stop the spread of the virus. She explained that they would have an online class everyday to talk about issues and ask for help. Most of Jimmy's class were excited but Jimmy was a bit sad. Online learning meant he couldn't play with his friends at lunchtime.
Covid-19
Self Isolation

When Jimmy came home with a note that afternoon, he told Mum what had happened. She listened carefully and read the note. "Jimmy," she said, "Do you know what self isolation is?" Jimmy shook his head, he had never heard that word before. "Self isolation is when you stay at home away from other people. If we stay home we can't get the virus and give it to other people, everyone is safe". "Do I have to stay away from you?" asked Jimmy. "No, we live together so you can be near me, but we might have to stop visiting Granny for a while to keep her safe too". I can do that, thought Jimmy. Then everyone will be safe.

Self Isolation keeps us safe.

Then next day when Jimmy got home from school, Mum was slumped over on the couch looking sad. Jimmy ran to the sink washed his hands and ran over to give her a hug. "What's wrong Mum?" he asked. Mum sighed and scooped him into her arms. "You know how this virus is shutting down your school, well other places are shutting down too. Including the cafe." Jimmy looked at her and said, "Will you work from home with me?" Mum laughed, "You can't work from home in a cafe," she said. "But anyway, I won't be, I lost my job today".

Because the cafe is shutting, they can't afford to pay everyone, so some people have to go.
Jimmy finished school that Friday and online learning started on Monday. Jimmy got to sleep in a bit longer than usual. Mum got up with him too and made him special pancakes. "A special breakfast for a special day of online learning!" she said, as she flipped a pancake over. Jimmy was a bit excited, he had never done anything like this before. At nine o'clock he got on Mum's computer and she helped him get onto his Zoom class. Jimmy was excited to see all his friends and Mrs Miller, his class looked excited too. Maybe online learning isn't so bad, he thought.

Jimmy was enjoying online learning, he liked sitting next to Mum asking her for help. While he was working she applied for financial help, and looked for any odd jobs she could complete from home, she brought him snacks and at night they built a cubby and watched movies. Mum helped Jimmy make choc-chip cookies and together they learned how to knit. Jimmy made a red scarf and gave it to Mum as a gift, she put it on immediately.
