Chapter 1 : The Cell
I sat in my prison cell, bound down by iron chains. My stomach grumbled and my throat was parched. It had been like this for three days now. Ever since I had stolen that chicken for my family to eat. But I had more problems to worry about than being hungry. Was I going to be hanged? The judge said that he still had to decide what punishment he was going to give me. Last year, Ma said that an eight year old boy got hanged for stealing a penny. If I stole a chicken would that mean I would die too? I shook my head to get rid of the thought and dozed off.

“OY, number 483 get up!” yelled one of the soldiers. I was hauled up none too carefully and someone attached foot shackles and handcuffs. Then I was dragged out and put on a cart. There was a girl around my age sitting next to me. She had strawberry-blonde hair and a friendly smile. She smiled at me and I gave a nervous smile back. The soldier barked
“You are going to serve seven years in Australia as your crime for stealing”. I gulped. Seven years! In Australia! I wouldn't even see my family. I felt tears prickling my eyes.
The girl next to me softly said, “ It's alright, we can do this together. By the way, my name is Sarah''. I wiped away my tears and said, “My name is Millicent but you can call me Millie”. We smiled at each other in agreement. And just like that, I had made a new friend.
Chapter 2 : The Ship
The cabin we were shoved into was the most filthiest thing on earth. There was the sharp stench of vomit mixed with a tang of urine. Almost everyone had lice and we were assigned two to a bed. There had been almost no food for two days and Sarah had begun to vomit. I had asked her if she was alright but she waved away my concern by saying it was just seasickness. Then there was no water and that was when Sarah collapsed.
