Dedicated to all children who are afraid of the flushing sound a toilet makes.

The sound of the toilet flushing truly can be terrifying, can’t it? It’s likely one of the loudest and most upsetting moments of your day. What was once a calm and sleepy toilet has now turned into a loud, hungry, and scary monster. Like a big, red, flying monster with a loud roar and sharp teeth.

No wonder you want to run out of the bathroom as fast as you can! No wonder you don’t want to flush either, because that sound is terrifying! It sounds like 100 airplanes, helicopters, and rockets are all taking off at the same time. I can’t even hear myself think! I would want nothing to do with this toilet monster either.

I believe I may know a secret though. Let’s think about this for a second. Has the toilet ever come to life? Has it ever grabbed you while you were trying to escape the bathroom and sucked you down the drain? Has it ever opened and closed it’s lid as if creating some sort of mouth and you were on the menu?

My guess is that none of this has happened because we’re having this conversation; and if it has happened, then I guess I’m a liar. Even though your imagination is vivid and you’re able to come up with all kinds of interesting stories, imagine new lands, and believe in worlds where everything can be and will be possible, let’s think about what actually happens after you flush.

Right before you’re finished using the bathroom, you’re tummy starts to get upset and you begin to fear the flushing part. You look around the bathroom and make sure there is a clear path to the door. You also make sure the door is open as well so you can make a clean escape. After you get off the toilet, you stand as far away as possible from the toilet as you reach your hand towards the knob to flush. Your body is turned towards the door and your feet already start walking that way as your hand reaches the cold knob.

You muster up the courage to flush with a strong push on the knob, then the monster wakes up and the water begins to swirl. The sound gets louder and louder as you bolt towards the door, hoping that nothing grabs your feet and drags you towards the toilet on the way out. You run out of the bathroom and down the hallway, diving into the couch headfirst. Safe at last! Another close call! But guess what?

There wasn’t really a monster was there? It wasn’t actually that loud. The toilet didn’t grow teeth. It didn’t try to grab your foot and it didn’t pull you back towards it as you fled the bathroom! That’s one active imagination you have. Maybe you should be a writer or make movies one day! I bet you’d be great! Let’s go back to the bathroom and try flushing again, because it really didn’t seem to be that bad after all.
