It is the first day of the new school-year at Wilkins Middle School. The summer has come to an end, and students are begrudgingly leaving behind their late nights and free time.

Everyone in middle school knows that less free time means less time to spend with friends. Luckily, some students are returning from summer break with a solution. Cell phones are everywhere, and two friends entering 7th grade, Hadley and Sarah, are no exception.

Hadley and Sarah have been texting all summer, and do not plan on stopping any time soon. They have both agreed that school will not get in the way of their friendship.
The girls were sad to learn that their schedules did not put them in any of the same classes. The only chance they would get to see each other would be during lunch. That wasn't going to stop them.
Hadley:
Hey! who is ur homeroom? I have Mrs. Johnson
Sarah:
omg I have Mr. Floyd ;(
Hadley:
wtheck, our schedules wnt b the same :(((

The girls manage their first half of the first day and make their way to lunch. Hadley gets to the cafeteria first. She sits with a group of friends she made years past. The friends are Emma, Celeste, and Sam.
Sarah enters the cafeteria and is shocked to see that Hadley has not saved her a seat. There is no room left that she can see. Feeling betrayed, she walks out of the cafeteria and eats her lunch outside.

Sarah sends Hadley a text, and doesn't receive a reply. She feels left out, sad, and angry. She reflects on her time this summer with her friend, and questions if she really had a friend to begin with.
If Hadley was a true friend, how could she forget to make the most out of the short time they had together during the school day? She felt replaced. First Hadley could text but not speak in real life, and now she couldn't even text back either?
Hadley:
....
Sarah:
R u srs???? }:(

Meanwhile, Hadley tells her friends, "Hey guys, could we make room for Sarah? She should be here anytime!"
"Actually, I am going to sit with some other guys!" Sam explains, as he leaves to another table.
Hadley looks around the cafeteria and can't find Sarah. She was sure she told her before school started that she would meet her here. Hadley checks her messages and sees a peculiar one from Sarah.
"Am I serious? Serious about what?" she thinks. The bell rings to dismiss to the next class before Hadley can reply. She walks to her next class, puzzled, and finds her seat.

Sarah can't believe her friend's behavior. She sits through the rest of the school day with no reply. After deciding to send one last message, Hadley's reply is Sarah's last straw. She blocks her number!
Hadley:
i am a good friend n i h8 drama
Sarah:
sum friend u r

Hadley feels relief upon reading Sarah's message that she is a good friend. She assumes she took Sarah's initial text wrong. Maybe Sarah was being general, and wasn't asking if Hadley herself was serious.
She resumes her usual joking manner with Sarah and agrees that she is a good friend, and tries to express her relief in the resolution by stating that she "hates drama." She did not sense the sarcasm of Sarah's message, and Sarah did not sense the sarcasm of Hadley's.
She carries on her usual night and figures that Sarah must have gone to bed early, and that is why she doesn't reply again.

The next day at school, Hadley runs into Sarah in the hallway.
"Hey!" Hadley says, but Sarah walks right past her and scoffs as she goes.
Sam walks by and tells Hadley, "Sarah said you guys aren't friends anymore, and that she can't believe any of us would be your friend either after how you treated her."
"What?!?!" Hadley shouts. "I have no idea what she is talking about!"
