The sound of high heels walking, scraping the new, wooden floor echoes in the hallway. That's definitely Mrs.Andrewton, the principal, Nelly thinks.
The bright sunlight shines through the ruby curtains in the classroom, although it is still chilly outside.
¨Good morning, class! I have an announcement,” she says in a dark, deep tone, seriously.
She was wearing something I've only seen doctors wear, Nelly observes. It was a mask. Eyes wonder all over the room, making eye contact with their peers, with wide-open eyes.

¨As many of you heard there is a new virus going on - Covid-19. Your parents are already notified, as they have gotten an email that you are all leaving. This is only temporary, in the hope of you guys coming back as soon as possible. You will be getting work to take home with you for the course of two weeks. So far, let's just hope it's only two weeks that we will not see each other. However, from there, of course, we will notify you and your parents. Check your emails! Also, as you leave this building in the next five minutes, please do not interact with everyone in sight. No hugs, or anything like that, please. Thank you, guys, for understanding, and hopefully I will see you all soon! Stay safe!¨Mrs.Andrewton announces.

As the words come out of her mouth, a cold current went up and down Sammy´s spine, creating shivers. She hopes and hopes that because April Fools is coming up, this is all a joke.
Nelly, on the other hand, is celebrating with all her peers. Her mouth is wide open, in disbelief, with wrinkles under her eyes, looking at everyone. Two weeks off, I mean, that's just a dream! Hopefully, it is not an April Fools joke, Nelly reflects.
Then, all the children pick up their belongings and throw them into their backpacks, anxious to be the first to leave school, as Mrs.Andrewton observed from the hallway, wearing a mask with a shield, and six one-foot-long measuring sticks. No one was worried about the new virus, all anyone cared about was getting home, except for Sammy.

Sammy, debates whether to go up to Mrs.Andrewton and ask questions about this new, so-called virus, as she slowly and neatly situates her belongings into her backpack. The words that Mrs.Andrewton said resonated with her, like something stays on hot glue.
Nelly, throwing, rather than laying down her items neatly in her backpack, says, ¨I would hug you, but we cannot hug each other,¨ she laughs and blows a kiss to Sammy.
Sammy moves back as Nelly tries to get close, but still blows a kiss back. She also waited for everyone to leave the classroom so she is not in much of a crowd when she tries to get on the bus.
As soon as everyone leaves, Sammy covers her mouth and nose with her navy blue, short-sleeved shirt, and runs out of the building and onto the bus, shaking, hoping the virus did not catch her.

The next day, Nelly wakes up, and emerges to look at her alarm clock, which reads 10:31. She smirks, thinking about the fact that she finally woke up on her own, not her alarm clock. She jumps out of bed, and runs around her house, screaming ¨Yay! No school!!!¨.
Next, Sammy wakes up with a knock at her door. Her father, covered with a shield over three different-colored masks, says something she cannot hear, but assumes is ¨Good morning, darling! Let's get out of bed.¨
Sammy immediately puts her light blue mask on, and another one - for protection. She makes her bed and goes to eat breakfast.
Sammy´s father, Michael, and her mother, Rachael sit at the dining table, spread apart, as they read newspapers.

¨Make sure to sit six feet away from us, sweetheart,¨ Sammy´s mother declares. ¨We all need to wear our masks at all times throughout the day, stay six feet apart, and go outside many, many times to get a breather. That is the only time you can take your mask off - outside. However, you have to stay far away from others. Oh, and no friends coming over,¨ Rachael informs Sammy, smiling under her mask, while popping some almonds in her mouth, and chewing them with her mask on.

On the other side of town, there is Nelly, who is also eating breakfast with her parents.
Alexandra, her mother, and Carlos, her father ordered food that will be delivered to their house.
Alexandra reads an online newspaper, in which she reads out loud, ¨The new virus requires people to quarantine at home and only interact with others if they are socially distancing.¨
¨This is crazy. I am telling you, the virus was purposely planned for people to suffer. This is unbelievable. I just lost my job, and now I have to find a job to work from home,¨ Carlos shrieks.

Both girls on opposite sides of town, lay on their bed thinking about each other, and why they have not been communicating, at least over the phone.
A few days later, Sammy hears a notification from her phone. Ding! The text reads Hey girl. Wanna meet at your place or mine? I´m so happy there´s no school!¨
Sammy´s palms get sweaty, her heart rate increases, and she feels that fluttery nervous stomach feeling. She does not want to talk to Nelly. Nelly is so, very different from her. She just does not understand that I don´t want to talk to her anymore!
How about we FaceTime? she finally replies.
A minute later, Sammy´s phone rings.
´´´´Hello¨¨!¨ xclaims Nelly.
¨´´´´´Hi,¨´´´´´ Sammy replies back, surrounded in silence.
Both girls, on different ends of the line, look down at their feet. Sammy, rocking side to side, and Nelly picking at her hair, both thought the same thing. What happened to our friendship?
¨Umm, sorry my parents are calling me to help with something,¨ Sammy comes up with an excuse to break the silence, at last.
Nelly nodd, hangs up the phone, and sighs heavily.
The next day, Sammy Facetimes Nelly, trying to smooth things over, rather than staying in an awkward faze.
¨¨¨¨ Hey,¨ Nelly picks up.
As Sammy is coming up with things to talk about she replies with, ¨Hi! How are you?¨
¨Good!¨
¨That´s good. How´s your day been?¨
¨It was good. What about yours?¨
¨Same,¨ Sammy is fighting the silence.
¨My phone´s about to die. Is it okay if we talk later?¨ Nelly asks quickly.
However, they never did, in fact, speak again in three months.

On a foggy, humid morning, a Google Classroom notification pops up for Mr.Hammels´s class. Both girls open it up and see Good morning, class! I miss seeing you every morning in Civics class. Hopefully you do too! To just go over all the vignette you guys had to write about aviation, please join the Google Meet link posted below. Check your writing piece once more, to make sure it is superfluous and cohesive to evoke the aesthetic of freedom. When you join the Google Meet, please have your surname written, so I know who you are. Feel free to ask any questions, and be able to communicate with your friends for some time! See you at 9:30!
