Introduction
Hello, my name is Grace, and I am challenging you to help
clean up city of Danbury. I am here to tell you about ways that
we can prevent water pollution, which is all the germs,
bacteria, chemicals and litter gets into our water. Do you like
going fishing, swimming, or playing at the beach? Well, some
of the water that we are swimming in, or fishing in is not clean.
When people throw litter or don't clean up after their pets, all of
this sits on the ground until it rains. When it rains, all of this
will percolate into the ground, which means to soak into the
ground. This is called groundwater. This will eventually get
to the ocean. It gets to the ocean by the surface runoff,
which means it goes from rainfall, to a stream, to a river, to a
lake and eventually to the ocean.

The Water Cycle
Here is a diagram of The Water Cycle. The water cycle is the way the
water works. First, the water turns from a liquid to a gas, which
means to evaporate. Transportation is when the water evaporates
off of trees and plants. The water goes up to the sky when it
evaporates. Then the water turns from a gas to a liquid which creates
a cloud form. This is called condensation. After condensation, it
turns from a solid to a liquid, and rain, sleet, or snow falls down. This
is precipitation. When the water gets to the ground, it either
evaporates or percolates into the ground. When percolation
happens, that is called groundwater. If the water doesn't evaporate
or percolate, it goes to the surface runoff and eventually gets to the
ocean. Then the cycle repeats.

Surface Runoff
Surface Runoff is after rainfall, (precipitation) if
the water does not percolate into the ground or
evaporate, it would travel to the surface runoff.
This is when the water goes down a stream or river
and eventually gets to the ocean. This water does
go to lakes, and this is where we swim in and go
fishing in. If there is litter on the ground or waste,
all of this will get to the lake. We want to have
clean water because it keeps the environment
healthy.

Watershed
This is a map of Connecticut with it's major rivers, and
it's watersheds. A watershed is an area of land where
all the water drains from a highest point to the lowest
point. People throw litter or waste on the ground, and
it all sits there. When it rains, all of this travels with the
water along the surface runoff. The water and all of the
garbage goes from a stream, to a river, and then to a
lake. We don't want all of this garbage and bacteria to
be in the place we swim in or fish in. Also water that
comes from wells and reservoirs is the water we drink.
If that water is polluted, then we can get sick. This can
also harm the environment.
