"A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people."
- Mahatma Gandhi

I was always the class clown at school. I liked to make my classmates laugh all the time. One day during recess I thought it would be funny to put feathers in my hair and dance around like an Indian. Everybody laughed except for my friend Brian. He sighed and walked away.

He avoided me for the rest of the day. We would always walk home from school together but this time he left on his own. Was he angry at me? I don't know why. "See you tomorrow Brian." But he never responded. He didn't even turn around.

The next day Brian still wouldn't talk to me. During a game of dodgeball he purposely threw the ball at me as hard as he could. "Hey! What's wrong with you?" I shouted. But again he wouldn't respond. He just walked away in a huff.

I waited for Brian after school but he was nowhere to be found. He had already started to walk home on his own. I ran after him to find out why he was avoiding me. "Brian! Did I do something wrong?" "Yes you did actually. I don't want to talk about it." "C'mon, I'm your best friend!" I followed him to his house where he lived with his grandmother.

"I didn't really appreciate your Indian dance with the feathers and paint the other day." "I was just joking around. You know how I like to entertain my friends." "Well it wasn't funny. I'm Aboriginal Jozef. You were making fun of my culture." "I didn't realize. I'm so sorry." "Now you know. You're lucky that you're Polish. Nobody ever makes Polish jokes." "Uh yeah. Never."

"Hi Grandma. This is my friend Jerzy from school. Is it okay if he stays for dinner?" "Absolutely. Nice to meet you Jerzy." "I'm just going to go call home and make sure it's okay with my parents." "Sounds good. I'll go fix you boys a nice bowl of stew."

"I hope you brought your appetite because I made plenty of stew. I'll give you some to take home Jerzy." The food was delicious as I helped myself to two heaping bowls. "Don't worry about the dishes boys, Brian will take care of that later." "Oh great!" he chuckled. "Go relax in the living room and I'll be right in with some dessert."
