Why do we write poetry?
People write poetry for many reasons that can go on forever. The reason why I write what I do is because it forces patience, and strengthens my insight: something incredibly important as an engineer and human.
I Am Poem
I wrote my I Am poem the way I did because this poem described exactly who i am. These small words in this poem represented me. There is many emotions in this poem. Which meant I wrote it straight from my heart and also the mind itself. In this poem, I use repetition to highlight the sentence that best described me. Also, within this poem, you can see a little of what I am into in my life.
I am kind and funny
I wonder if I can make my dreams come true
I hear chocolate calling my name
I see different people everywhere
I want a perfect life
I am kind and funny
I pretend I am famous
I feel my heart hammering
I touch the sky on a blistering day
I worry about my friends and family
I cry because of my unhappiness
I am kind and funny
I understand life and death
I say never give up
I dream about my future
I try to be good at everything I do
I hope I will achieve my goals
I am kind and funny
Bio Poem: Sammie Diep
I wrote my Bio poem using one of the figurative languages. I used mostly simile because I wanted to explain what I am. This poem talk about who I am, who I am related to, and things about my life. It mostly about my hobbies, my family, and my friends. This poem is true and exactly described me.
Sammie,
Jaunty, optimistic, nurturing, imaginative
Friend of Marilyn, Haylie, and Jelena
Lover of games, chocolate, and vacation
Who feels strongly about peace, family, and friends
Who needs protection, love, and self-confidence
Who gives friendship, advice, and love
Who fears hate, sorrow, and homework
Who would like to see Italy, Korea, or other new countries
Resident of Santana High School

Re-Creation Poem: Before Midnight
Within this poem I took out words from Gary Soto's poem and created a poem of my own. The poem is about a feeling that I get before I go to bed at night. The poetic devices that I used in this poem are personification. Sun sleeps, moon smiles is an example that showing personification.
There are some nights
I look at the sky
Sun sleeps, moon smiles,
Stars shine.
Stars so high,
Stars so bright,
I can see,
But I can’t touch.
One time, I saw
The comets
They burned so bright
And so fast
That they don’t last.
Sometimes I go outside
To look up
At the sky.
It’s usually at night
And nothing
Bother my mind.
Winds hissing
Through me,
The cold weather
Freezes my shoulder.
I put my hands
In my pocket.
Wishing I have
A hot chocolate.
Select words are from Gary Soto’s poem “Oranges”
Imitation Poem: Morning in the Evening
Imitation of Federico Garcia Lorca’s style in his poem “Llanto por Ignacio Sanchez Mejias"
The setting of my imitation poem, "Morning in the evening," is World War II. With the phrase, "the wind is blowing like a hurricane", I used onomatopoeia to make the audience feel and hear the constant artillery in the battle. And I used personification by saying that the beasts are hiding. Using strong poetic devices to get you in a mind set and feel the pain putting in lots of imagery and alliteration.
At five fifty-five in the evening
It was exactly five fifty-five in the evening
The wind is blowing like a hurricane
At five fifty-five in the evening
In the frightening desolated lands
At five fifty-five in the evening
Where the animals are insane
At five fifty-five in the evening
While the beasts are hiding
At five fifty-five in the evening
Behind the black cover that no one's finding
At five fifty-five in the evening
Too many hands washed in people's tears
At five fifty-five in the evening
Too many hearts frozen unfeeling from fears
At five fifty-five in the evening
Wounded souls covered in blotched black fate
At five fifty-five in the evening
A bright, radiant flash scorches the horizon
At five fifty-five in the evening
And ashes drift upward, blinging their bare, dangling feet
At five fifty-five in the evening
But the dead couldn’t know the sentiment of defeat.
At five fifty-five in the evening
It was exactly five fifty-five in the evening
Definition Poem: Happiness
Within this poem I picked the word "Happiness" to write about because I like its meaning and want to be happy most of the time. Happiness is one of the things that create a life. Life cannot be define without happiness, sadness, and many other things. Also, the reason I wrote this poem is because there are lots of people don't understand what happiness exactly is. I used these examples in this poem to explain the word "happiness".
Happiness: [hap-ee-nis], noun, the quality or state of being happy;
good fortune; pleasure; contentment; joy: A word with no true meaning
but a word that somehow depicts all of what one is feeling;
When I catch myself smiling for no reason at all;
When everything possible is going wrong
but I bring myself to laugh through it all;
When I see him smile or when we look at each other in the eyes.
Happiness is accepting oneself fully for when I know my flaws
and weaknesses no one can ever use them against me.
Happiness can be described in so many different ways
So let's just hope when it finally comes it will never go away.
Limerick Poem: A Little Girl
I wrote this poem because I thought it would be funny. This poem is about a girl trying to open an egg. In this poem I used rhyme with Ceindeg, egg, and leg. I think this poem might get a laugh out of whomever the reader is.
There once was a little girl called Ceindeg
Who tried to break open an egg
She kicked it around
But she fell on the ground
And found that she’s broken a leg.
