David rode the bus to school Thursday morning with a new confidence in himself. Ever since he had gotten his powers the previous week, things had been getting better. Only himself and Gavin knew, but that was enough for him. He grinned, holding his backpack in his lap. He saw the girl from school who had comforted him the previous week and looked at her with kind eyes. She blushed, looking down. David arrived at school, hopping off the bus. Once again, the bullies were there waiting for him. He grumbled, "Not again..." They walked up to him, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. David's brows furrowed in fear. Darius liked to see other's fear. He snickered, lifting David up high and clenching his fist, about to punch him. David felt a rush of adrenaline go through his body and he stared at Darius's shoulder, imagining the bone slipping out of place. He didn't truly mean for it to happen. The bully's eyes widened as he he heard a loud pop and looked down. Tears came to his eyes and he dropped David with a fearful cry, shuffling away.
David watched the bully with narrowed eyes as his body went limp and collapsed. Darius's 'friends' ran off in terror. David watched them run away and sighed, looking down at him. He picked Darius up, slinging him over his shoulder and began making his way towards the nearby forest. He couldn't get in trouble at school again and he knew it. David looked up into the dark, looming trees of the morning. A chilly breeze blew on him, flowing easily through his thin blue T-shirt. He shivered slightly, eyeing Darius. He was breathing calmly and peacefully now, though was a bit pale. David frowned, looking at his shoulder and carefully set him down on the moist ground, leaning him against a tree. David groaned softly, grasping his shoulder firmly. He put his foot on Darius's chest to hold him still and yanked hard on his shoulder. It popped back into place. David sat down on a log in front of Darius, watching him closely. He was waiting for him to wake up. Soon Darius's eyes flickered open and he stared at him. He then looked around, "Where in the world am I!?"
David spoke softly, looking at him calmly, "We're in the forest."
"Why!? Why did you take me here!?" His eyes watered, "My shoulder hurts!"
"I apologize. It was an accident."
"You did this!?"
"Yes."
The bully's eyes burned with hatred and fear. David looked back at him, "I didn't know what else to do at that moment. Do you need me to take you to the doctor?" He hissed, "I don't need anyone!" David nodded slightly, "Okay. I guess I'll leave then." He began walking away, grinning to himself.
"Wait!"
"What is it, Darius?"
"Bring me home..p-please."
David turned around, seeing him struggling to stand up.
David's eyes twinkled as he walked over to him, "Will you apologize?"
"Never!"
"I thought so."
He grasped Darius's good arm, pulling him up easily, "Come on..I'll show you the way out." He followed David, grumbling. Soon they got out of the thick forest and the sun seemed to appear out of nowhere. They both sighed softly as they were warmed up. He led Darius back to town, saying goodbye and walked in the other direction. He called out, "David! Wait..I just wanted to.." he held his breath, letting it out, "..thank you for helping me. My shoulder doesn't hurt as much as it did." David bowed his head slightly and continued on without a word. He felt good about himself. Maybe the bullying would stop after this. He had been praying for this for several years now and it finally happened. He was glad his powers were still concealed. Darius had been in too much shock to notice exactly what happened.
David took a deep breath, laying by a stream in the park. The sound of it soothed and calmed his mind, helping him think and pray better. The air felt cleaner and lighter here. He looked up into the branches of the tree..or a large bush? Sometimes he couldn't tell. It made little difference to him though, it was beautiful. Again, someone grabbed him from behind. He winced, preparing for blows. But there were none. There was a man holding him, dressed in the light of the sun. He spoke softly, "David..you did well today. You aided your enemy. I am proud of you. From now on, you will only be able to speak to me within the silence of your heart. I can also speak to you through the beauty of the world." He looked into the man's eyes with surprise, "I know who you are!"
"Is that so, my son?" The figure laughed softly.
"What do you want me to do with my new abilities?"
"Anything you believe to be good and pure. Avoid using them out of anger or hatred.
"What will happen if I do?"
"You can be forgiven. But don't intentionally let it build up, or it can cause serious consequences."
"I understand."
The man disappeared, leaving behind a calm feeling in the air. David was afraid to take on this responsibility, but knew he had to. He lifted an eyebrow, "But what am I supposed to do with my powers?" No anwser. He shrugged, "Well..I guess I'll have to figure that out." He walked back to his home, hopping onto his computer. He decided to get a job..or start training for one, anyways. He was scrolling through pages and pages of places that were hiring when one caught his eye: "Certified EMTs and Paramedics for hire". He grinned. Yes, this is what he wanted to do. He called them, saying he didn't have the training but wanted it. They signed him up for the class. He was so excited, knowing this job was for him.
