Summary of the Book

The book tells the story of Plop, a baby barn owl, and how he is afraid of the dark. His Mum encourages him to go down to the ground to meet and speak with other people and discuss what they think about the dark. They describe the dark in a variety of ways and Plop discovers that not everyone is afraid of the dark like him.

Chapter 1: Dark is exciting

In the first chapter, Plop tells his mum that he is afraid of the dark and wants to be a day bird. His mum suggests that he should get to know more about the dark before he makes up his mind! So Plop goes to speak to a boy who is collecting firewood for a bonfire. The boy explains that he is excited about the dark because dark is when the fireworks start. Plop and his parents enjoy watching the fireworks in the dark.

Chapter 2: Dark is kind

In chapter 2, Plop goes to find out more about the dark. He visits an old lady who says dark is kind because it hides her wrinkles and helps her remember when she was younger. Plop flies back to his tree and tells his mother, but still doesn't like the dark.

Chapter 3: Dark is fun

In Chapter 3, Plop visits a scout boy who is looking after the campfire. He tells Plop that the dark is fun. He explains that he and his friends enjoy playing games in the dark. Plop tells his mum about his adventure but says he STILL does not like the dark.
